Arisrv Drive: encrypted on your device before it is uploaded
2 min readBy Arisrv
Arisrv Drive encrypts every file on your device, in small chunks, before it is uploaded. File and folder names are encrypted too; our servers see the folder structure, file sizes and dates, but not the names or contents.
How files are encrypted
Each file gets its own random key, and the file is encrypted on your device in small chunks before upload. Your keys are derived from your account password on your device. When a file changes, the apps upload only the changed chunks.
Names are encrypted too
File and folder names are encrypted along with their other details. Because names are encrypted, search runs on your device, not on our servers.
What our servers can see
To store and sync your files, our servers see the folder structure, the exact size of each file, when files are created, changed and deleted, how many versions exist, and a log of changes (which item changed, by which device and when). They do not see names or contents.
Malware scanning
When malware scanning is switched on, a file is checked by our scanner before it is encrypted and stored, which means the scanner sees that file's contents at that moment. The file is not kept by the scanner. The app tells you when scanning applies.
Versions, trash and sharing
You can restore earlier versions of a file, and deleted files stay in the trash for at least 30 days. Share links can have a password, an expiry date and a download limit, and you can revoke a link at any time. A share link carries the key needed to open the file, so anyone who already opened the link may keep access to what they downloaded; revoking stops our servers from serving it.
Platforms
Drive works on the web, and the Android app is in testing. The Windows app keeps a local folder in sync with your Drive automatically (it checks for changes about once a minute). iOS, macOS and Linux apps are not available yet.
